12/2/2022 0 Comments My neighbor totoro summary![]() Shinto is an Animist religion, one that believes in spirits. I can also see how the whole Shinto religion may have come about from this movies example. You can also see the fantasy part of this film as the girls coping mechanisms and how they escape into a fantasy world to cope with their real world stress. It's this serious sub-text that makes it so human and relatable no matter your age (except for maybe teens like OP). It's this sad sub-context that, for me makes this film and separates it from the light-hearted Disney type of animation films. If you watch the movie again, definitely look for the themes of the fear of loss, the fear of loneliness, and coping mechanisms. The movie is not only about the magic of youth, but about how hard life changing events are at that age. There are instances where May, the younger girl, starts to go into darker places, and Satsuki and her father keep her mood up which is difficult when the same fear and uncertainty rests in their hearts too. And the same with the girls, they try to keep themselves in a good mood, and so does their father. ![]() The cloud of World War 2 still hangs over everyone, but they move on despite it. This also takes place in the the 50's, also known as the post-war period for Japan. Both the two girls are actively forgetting that they're mother is going to be in the hospital for a very long time, and might not live beyond the year. When the movie starts out, the family is moving to the country to be closer to the hospital. A great deal of this movie has to deal with subtext. ![]()
